After the Frankfurt motor show in 1963 the first of what was to become the most famous Porsche rolled off the production line in 1964. The 911 was 100mm longer than the 356, this made it a more practical two plus two and with its new 2 liter flat six engine it was faster. In 1966 Porsche introduced the more powerful 911S producing 160 bhp and giving a top speed of 137 mph. 1970 sore the engine capacity rise to 2.2 liters and then in 1972 to 2.4 liters. The respected Carrera name was to reappear in 1973, as before this 911 was the fastest model in the range fitted with a 2.7 liter 210 bhp unit giving a top speed of 148 mph.

The legendary 911 Turbo appeared in 1974 and went into production in 1975. The 3 liter engine produced 260 bhp giving 153 mph top speed and 0 to 60 mph in just 6.4 seconds. 1978 sore the engine size rise to 3.3 liters producing 300 bhp, 160 mph top speed and 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. The 911SC still one of the most sort after 911's began life in 1978 with a 3 liter 180 bhp engine and continued through to 1983 with a 3 liter 204 bhp engine. The Cabriolet first made its appearance in true form in 1982 with a 3 liter 180 bhp engine. In 1984 the Carrera engine was enlarged to 3.2 liters and this car stayed in production until 1989 in various forms.
